You’re using an extremely small minority to describe a majority of able-bodied, financially able people who are too lazy/selfish to make an ethical choice.
I don’t care about anyone’s feelings or how hard it is for them. Anyone who has the ability to use the internet to make countless excuses as a release from guilt also has the power to do research to make a healthy, affordable lifestyle change. Making adjustments for their own personal needs or disabilities varying from personal health to location.
You call me a classist, I call you lazy. Boycott the animal industry by any and all means necessary. I don’t give a shit about your speciesist opinion or self importance in which you justify killing and torturing countless animals for your “health”. You’re one human, what makes you think you’re more important than all the sentient beings that sustain your miserable existence?
The human species disgusts me. You’ll bend over backwards to make sure all humans regardless of gender, sex, or orientation live as easy a life as possible. But when it comes to allowing non-human animals to simply live life naturally or not under control of our vile species you make excuses? Someone rapes a human, you’re furious. Someone rapes millions of cows once every year, you couldn’t care less because some people “can’t afford” not supporting it. You’re so blinded by speciesism you don’t even recognize how absurd putting convenience before basic rights of life truly is.
You’re a disgrace to progression. Takes all steps possible to become vegan or stop pretending you care. There is no privilege more glaring or destructive than species privilege. Social barriers are absolutely nothing compared to a literal inability to be seen as anything more than a product to be abused, sold and consumed. Take your ableism and classism allegations and fuck off.
how about all of us able bodied, financially privileged vegans stop having this fucking argument on the internet. regardless of how you feel about it, the availability of healthy food is an issue we should at least be talking about (and working to resolve). in like, a real, non angsty or rude way.
ive seen little to no discussion about this in my vegan community, one that involves a headquarters of a national animal rights group that advocates the adoption of a vegan diet by everyone. what i see when it is brought up is a bunch of knee jerk reactions about poverty and the assumption that “if youre poor, youre lazy and/or ignorant.” and ive definitely seen no discussion on circumstances that prevent people from being vegan entirely. just because it calls our decision into question and possibly implies that it is not the DEFINITIVE answer to EVERYONES problems does not mean we should get angry and lash out about it. lets just like, talk about it and see what happens? lets treat everyone with a little respect? im not saying “lets walk on egg shells and let assholes make fun of the things we value” im just saying, if someone says they have had issues with maintaing a vegan diet due to WHATEVER THE FUCK our first response should not be “well you are a selfish lazy ignorant asshole and i hate you forever.”
i agree with most of what the OP said but i think the issues within our community are worthy of critique. there are plenty of vegans who think its acceptable to buy “vegan leather” or that its okay to buy out of season, organic produce as long as it comes from whole foods and are just generally unaware that you do not get to draw a line at where your ethics stop. if youre vegan you should, by default support all fighting against oppression, and that includes those “unable.”
i dont know how to fix these problems all i know is the back and forth ive seen over the past few days on the internet is just totally weird and unsettling. and now i am making it more weird by participating in it.
and, as is necessary on the internet, i mean no disrespect to anyone anywhere about anything. i just want to talk about things and learn what i can and not be an asshole whenever its possible to not be an asshole.
I honestly think it’s great that you want to be non-aggressive in all this but you’re making a two errors here. The first is that you don’t know the socio-economic status of the people making the argument. I obviously cannot speak on the part of the OP but I will gladly take a picture of my SNAP card to prove I’m low income. Just because someone says that “people of low income have no excuse to not go vegan” does not mean they are sitting on the perch of high finance.
There are people in this world who view meat as a luxury and cannot afford to live an omnivorous lifestyle. I think Western life is so different from that of “3rd World” nations that we tend to overlook this fact.
Second, while “non militant vegans” (“militant vegans” being a horrible insult to people who care just as much about animal rights as those who are not seen as a threat by the meat/dairy/egg industry and their customers) are having fun with their light conversations, being sure not to offend those who eat meat/dairy/eggs, millions upon millions of our fellow creatures are being tortured and slaughtered for no rational reason whatsoever.
I understand where you’re coming from and because I have to be surrounded by people who control my income/well being that eat meat/dairy/eggs I’m often like this too. However, there isn’t a button your can press to stall the systematic rape/torture/murder of non-human animals while you peacefully talk to these people. Perhaps you’ve gotten really lucky to not have people verbally belittle/assault you because you don’t think non-human animals should be murdered (and I’m so glad if that is the case) but I haven’t been so lucky. I don’t see why just because my/our views are unpopular we should stay in the shadows, cowardly peeping out every now and then, “gee guys maybe you could cut back a bit?” because that’s not going to do anything.
Anyone who says, “Well I personally don’t advocate the killing of Jews/blacks/Asians/women/gays/handicapped individuals &c. &c. but it’s really up to others to decide what’s right for them.” is going to get looks of horror from anyone with half a brain. I really don’t see why my or anyone else’s look of horror about non-human animals amounts to anything less than rationality and compassion.
